Production of Major Petrochemicals in India
In FY24, the petrochemical production map, shows a clear shift toward volume led polymers and olefins, which together account for roughly 58% of total petrochemicals production in India, underscoring where scale and demand resilience now lie.
Polymers alone rebounded to 12.5 MT, reinforcing their role as the sector’s backbone, while olefins rose sharply to 12.4 MT, almost 4× the output of aromatics, highlighting the long-term pivot away from aromatics.
Aromatics have steadily declined for six consecutive years and are now nearly 40% below their FY19 peak. Fibre intermediates and synthetic fibres appear structurally stable rather than growth-driven, together forming a consistent ~20% share, suggesting maturity and steady downstream demand.
Smaller segments like synthetic detergent intermediates and synthetic rubber, while minor in absolute terms, show gradual long-term creep, indicating incremental specialty growth.
A notable structural insight from the longer trend is that post-FY20 capacity additions disproportionately favored olefins and polymers, accelerating consolidation around bulk petrochemical chains, while performance plastics and aromatics lagged.
This signals a strategic industry tilt toward scale, feedstock integration, and high-throughput downstream consumption.
