Production of Major Chemicals in India

India’s major chemicals production is clearly alkali-led, with alkali chemicals at 9.2 MT accounting for roughly two-thirds (~71%) of total output of major chemicals that are manufactured annually in India. This also highlights the role of Alkali as the backbone of downstream manufacturing such as glass, soaps, textiles, and paper. Although alkali volumes eased slightly from the FY23 peak, they remain ~40% higher than a decade ago.
Organic chemicals form the second pillar at 2.0 MT (~15% share), having steadily expanded since FY16 and now producing nearly twice the volume of inorganic chemicals, signalling a gradual shift toward higher value-added organic value chain.
Dyes & pigments and pesticides together contribute less than 5% of total production, with their flat/marginal growth over the past decade.
