Steel Import and Export in India
India's status as a steel exporter has changed. For three years, from 2020–21 to 2022–23, India sold more finished steel to other countries than it bought (it was a net exporter).
However, that trend reversed, In both 2023–24 and 2024–25, India became a net importer (buying more steel than it sold). This pattern continued into the first half of the current fiscal year, April–September 2025–26.
Less steel was made globally this year. From January to August 2025, the world produced 1.7% less crude steel than in the same period in 2024. Production dropped from 1,251 million tons to 1,230million tons. Among the top 10 steel-producing nations, only India, the US, and Turkey made more steel. The other seven countries (including China, Japan, and Germany) all produced less steel
